Date: May 27, 2016

We are seriously worried that protest by about 2000 Shan people at Kyauk-me Township can lead to inter-ethnic conflict. During the protest against the TNLA on May 28, 2016, the participants madevarious kinds of slogans.

The Shan and the Ta'ang are two ethnic groups who have been living inpeaceful coexistence on the same land for time long past. But, now both of them are in the same boat fleeing the armed conflict asrefugees and suffering human rights violations under the current military/political situations.

The root cause of the problem is that we have not reached federalism and self-determination—the main goal set by all the ethnic people. So, it is about time for all the ethnic groups to cooperate to achieveour main political goal instead of doing things stirring anger andhatred.

So, we would like the Ta'ang people to show restraint and magnanimity so that the protest at Kyauk-mee cannot lead to inter-ethnic conflict between the Shan and the Ta'ang , and to continue friendly relationship as always.

Respectfully

Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO)

Ta’ang Student and Youth Union (TSYU)
